Development of an Integrated Microphysiological System (“Organs-on-a-Chip”) for Drug Efficacy and Toxicity Testing

 

Abstract:

From 2012.7, NIH started a five-year collaboration with Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DAROA) and FDA to develop 3-D human tissue chips containing bio-engineered tissue models that mimic human physiology. These chips are used to better predict the safety and effectiveness of candidate drugs. My presentation will report our current progress in the development of an integrated micro-physiological system that contains blood vessel and skeletal muscle. Several applications of this micro-physiological system including its functional assays, its interaction with immune cells, and drug efficacy and toxicity testing, will be reported and discussed.
